Your liver performs many important functions: producing bile to help digest food, converting it into energy, and metabolizing and detoxifying a cornucopia of compounds including alcohol, drugs, and environmental toxins. At the Health & Vitality Center, Dr. Shiva Lalezar – a holistic doctor in Los Angeles specializing in integrative and functional medicine – utilizes liver function tests and liver detoxification profile assessment as part of a battery of diagnostic tests in evaluating your overall health.
What are liver function tests?
Liver function tests typically measure total protein, albumin protein, bilirubin (a substance in bile), and liver enzymes (called ALT and AST). These are all markers of liver function. If they are abnormally elevated, it usually indicates some sort of liver disease or liver damage.
What is a liver detoxification profile?
A liver detoxification profile is a diagnostic test often used in functional medicine to assess how well your liver detoxifies certain chemical compounds.
How does the test work?
You will be given three drugs: aspirin, acetaminophen, and caffeine. Then you will provide saliva and urine samples for analysis. Each of these drugs has a different detoxification pathway. The levels of the metabolites found in your samples can provide valuable information as to which pathways may be impaired, and thus which diseases may be a factor.
In which medical conditions might a liver detoxification profile be a useful diagnostic test?
- Heavy Metal Burden
- Digestive Disorders
- Substance Abuse
- Chronic Fatigue Syndrome / Fibromyalgia
Based on the results of this diagnostic test, we may recommend the following treatments:
- Chelation Therapy
- Custom Diet and Exercise Plans/Lifestyle Modification
- Allergy Elimination Diet
- Intravenous Vitamin Therapy including IV Glutathione
- Nutritional Supplements
