Acne Isn’t Just A Skin Problem. It’s A Signal.

Generally, antibiotics, Accutane, or topical medications are used to treat acne in a conventional setting. Unfortunately, this approach may relieve the symptoms of acne, but it does not resolve the root cause of acne. These medications can cause dysbiosis (an imbalance between the good and bad bacteria in the gut) and leaky gut syndrome. Therefore, the very treatment for acne becomes the culprit of a multitude of health issues, such as Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Depression, and Anxiety.

Functional Medicine Approach to Treating Acne

Our approach to treating acne is to first investigate the underlying causes. Gut health is evaluated by GI Effect (Complete Diagnostic Stool Analysis), SIBO breath test, IgG and IgA mediated food sensitivity, and Leaky Gut test. In addition, a 6-hour urine toxicity screen is aimed at ruling out heavy metals such as mercury, lead, aluminum, cadmium, and nickel. Toxins can cause hormone disruption, which in turn can cause acne. Heavy metals cause biofilm formation around yeast and make it difficult to eliminate. Yeast can be the underlying cause of inflammation. Clearing up systemic yeast in the body can resolve your acne. Dietary Recommendation: elimination of gluten, dairy, soy, corn, citrus fruits, sugar, and alcohol.

“I’ve been coming to Dr. Lalazar for a year. I’m really happy I found her. I have had issues with my weight, acne, and stomach problems. Just by meeting me, she knew exactly what I needed to avoid and what tests we needed to run. With some supplements and diet that I need to practice at home, my stomach doesn’t have issues anymore, and with her guidance, I’ve cleared up most of my acne. My favorite thing about her practice is that you have the option to be holistic with eastern medicine as well as the option to be treated with western medicine. So, if you want to go the natural route, you can be prescribed supplements or alternatives, depending on your issues. She makes me feel so comfortable and welcomed, I’m really grateful!!”
