Hair Loss After COVID Is Real, Common, And Treatable

Many patients have noticed hair loss after a viral infection, fever, or COVID-19 infection. This condition is called Telogen Effluvium. This is when, instead of 10% of our hair shedding in the resting phase, over 50% starts shedding.

Generally, this hair loss is self-limiting and stops after 3-6 months. Eventually, hair starts to regrow, although it may not be noticeable at first. Reassurance and stress management are how we would manage this situation. Medication is not necessary at this point.

What Is Post-COVID Hair Loss?

Post-COVID hair loss most commonly occurs as a condition called telogen effluvium. In this pattern, the body shifts a larger percentage of hair follicles into the resting phase after a major stressor such as illness, fever, inflammation, or immune activation.

Instead of the typical amount of daily shedding, patients may notice significantly increased hair loss, often beginning several weeks after the infection.

Why Telogen Effluvium Happens After Viral Illness

Hair growth is sensitive to systemic stress. A viral illness can impact the body through:

  • Immune activation and inflammation
  • Fever and physiological stress
  • Changes in nutrient demand and absorption
  • Sleep disruption and adrenal stress
  • Shifts in hormones and metabolism during recovery

For many patients, the hair loss is not a sign of permanent damage. It is a signal that the body has been through a major event and is recalibrating.

How Long Does Post-COVID Hair Loss Last?

In most cases, post-COVID telogen effluvium is self-limiting and improves naturally over time. Shedding often slows within 3–6 months, and regrowth begins gradually.

However, regrowth can be subtle at first. Many patients feel discouraged because they expect an immediate reversal. In reality, hair recovery often happens in stages, and visible density can take longer to return.

When Post-COVID Hair Loss May Need Additional Support

While many cases resolve with reassurance and stress management, some patients benefit from deeper evaluation, especially when shedding is severe, prolonged, or paired with other symptoms. It may be appropriate to look deeper if you are experiencing:

  • Hair loss lasting beyond 6 months
  • Persistent fatigue or brain fog
  • New or worsening anxiety and insomnia
  • Weight changes or metabolic slowdown
  • Thyroid symptoms
  • Digestive issues or poor nutrient absorption

In these situations, the viral illness may have revealed an underlying imbalance that was already developing beneath the surface.

How Health & Vitality Center Supports Post-COVID Hair Recovery

At Health & Vitality Center, Dr. Shiva Lalezar focuses on supporting hair recovery by strengthening the internal systems that influence hair growth. Depending on your needs, your care may include:

Stress And Adrenal Support

Stress is one of the most common amplifiers of shedding. Dr. Lalezar helps patients stabilize the nervous system and support adrenal recovery so the body can return to a healthier growth cycle.

Nutrient Repletion And Absorption Support

Hair regrowth requires adequate nutrients and proper absorption. If digestion is compromised after illness, the body may struggle to rebuild. Supporting gut function can be a key part of restoring growth.

Thyroid And Hormonal Balance

Viral illness can affect thyroid and hormone stability, especially in patients who already had borderline patterns. Optimizing thyroid conversion and hormonal regulation can support stronger long-term regrowth.

Regenerative Options When Appropriate

For patients who want additional support, Health & Vitality Center also offers regenerative scalp treatments such as PRP-based options, which may help stimulate growth in appropriate candidates.
