Iodine/Iodide is pivotal to normal function of the thyroid gland, the health of breast tissue, and many other organs in the body.  Our intake of this element has decreased significantly over the past thirty years, and hypothyroidism, fibrocystic breast disease, polycystic ovarian syndrome have become very common.  The level of urinary iodine is utilized to assess iodine intake.  Once the evaluation is complete, a specific oral dose of iodine/iodide is given and a subsequent urine test is used to evaluate the level.  Supplemental iodine has been successful in treatment of thyroid nodules, fatigue, hypothyroidism, and resolution of cysts.
